Shannon Sowell’s career in Advancement spans more than 30 years in higher education, with more than half of it at WashU. Sowell, senior director of University Advancement’s administration team, feels fulfilled by working for a mission-driven institution.
“I believe in the ability of WashU to make an impact on our community and the humans in St. Louis through our resources, programs and people,” Sowell said. “Personally, I need to be challenged and have opportunities to grow, and I have found no shortage of either in Advancement.”
Sowell is part of the Organizational Development team within University Advancement (UA). She helps UA staff explore paths they find personally and professionally rewarding while contributing to the work of the team.
“I find the opportunities I have to coach staff as they navigate challenging situations and humans to be the most rewarding thing I do. I juggle lots of balls, doing my best to only drop the rubber ones rather than the glass ones.”
As a people manager with years of experience under her belt, Sowell has found being empathetic in supporting her team goes a long way. She ties back to the university’s mission to support and guide her team when someone may be struggling with a task or project.
“I work with very smart, skilled, driven humans who are doing important work for our staff,” Sowell said. “When they get overwhelmed or frustrated, I try to help them slow down and stay focused on the ultimate goal and the impact they want to make through their work and their interactions. I listen, ask questions and try to be as open and honest as possible.”
“[Shannon’s] unique path in advancement and at WashU has made her a powerhouse of institutional knowledge, her thoughtful mentorship and servant leadership style are inspirational to all who know her, and her ability to lead and champion her team while honestly acknowledging hurdles ahead is a gift to those who are lucky enough to work directly with her.”

To keep herself grounded, Sowell finds peace working in her yard and weeding. She also enjoys spin class, visiting museums, going to the theater and concerts, reading, cooking, and spending time with her family, her husband and two adult daughters.
