As Clinical Laboratory Manager in the Division of Hematology for WashU Medicine’s Department of Medicine, Cheryl Barrett plays a vital role in ensuring that patients receive top-notch, timely care during their visits. Barrett, who joined WashU in 2006, said her primary focus is providing exceptional patient care through continuously refining laboratory processes. Her team works diligently to streamline workflows, improve accuracy in test results and reduce patient wait times.
“The past 20 years at WashU have flown by, and no two days are ever the same. My department recognizes the important role our laboratory plays in the overall delivery of superior patient care. Benefits, opportunities for advancement and the satisfaction of performing an essential function contribute to work gratification.”
Giving 100% every day means both delivering top-quality results and fostering a positive team dynamic. Barrett believes that maintaining high standards goes hand-in-hand with creating a happy, healthy workspace where staff feel valued.
To keep morale strong, Barrett’s team regularly pauses to celebrate personal and professional milestones, from birthdays to growing families. Her dedication to her team does not go unnoticed.””
Cheryl has been an inspiring leader to me and all of the laboratory staff that she manages. Cheryl takes the time to engage with each one of the staff every day she is here and she listens to our concerns. She’s also an advocate for healthy eating and maintaining good mental health.

Barrett also participates as a WashU Wellness Champion to support well-being in her workspace. In 2024, she applied to the Champion Fund to purchase reusable water bottles, kept in lockers outside the lab for easy hydration, and lunch boxes to overcome the area’s limited food options due to safety protocols and regulations. Additionally, Barrett partnered with MyWay to Health to bring nutrition education directly to her colleagues and team.
When she isn’t in the lab, Cheryl prioritizes spending quality time with family and friends. She especially treasures time spent with her husband, children and five grandchildren. To unwind, she practices yoga several times a week, tends to her garden, catches up on reading and likes to travel to explore new places.
